KARGIl: Marking the third day of Wildlife Week celebrations, the Department of Wildlife Protection Kargil, in coordination with the Forest Department staff, successfully conducted an educational environmental initiative titled ‘Wings and Wetlands’ at Sher Bagh, Baroo.
The special program welcomed students from Bal Ashram Kargil for an immersive day outdoors aimed at fostering ecological awareness and nature appreciation among young learners.
Guided by experts from the Wildlife and Forest Departments, the students participated in an interactive workshop explaining the fundamental concepts of ecosystems—what an ecosystem is, how its intricate biological systems function, and why maintaining ecological balance is vital for the region.
As part of the practical learning segment, participants engaged in a guided bird-watching session. The students learned to identify various native and migratory bird species, while experts detailed the essential roles birds play within the ecosystem, including seed dispersal, pollination, and pest control. Additionally, the event introduced students to local wetland environments, highlighting the importance of wetland habitats and educating them on various native plants and tree species found in the landscape.
The Department of Wildlife Protection Kargil highlighted that connecting children—especially those from residential institutions like Bal Ashram—with nature outdoor learning helps build empathy for wildlife and inspires the next generation of environmental stewards
