Drass, October 5, 2026: Director Sheep Husbandry Department UT Ladakh Dr. Iftikhar Hussain today visited Drass to assess and review various ongoing and proposed initiatives aimed at strengthening the sheep husbandry, pashmina rearing and fodder development sectors in the region.
During the visit, the Director first inspected the proposed Fodder Development Land at Thasgam, identified by the local general public for fodder development for the department. He took stock of the potential of the site for fodder development and discussed the prospects of utilizing the land for strengthening the fodder base in the area.
The Director thereafter interacted with members of the Pashmina Growers Cooperative Society Bhimbat Drass. During the interaction, he stressed the need for strengthening and expanding Pashmina rearing in Drass District, highlighting its significant potential for improving the livelihoods of local livestock farmers and contributing to the development of the local economy.
Dr. Iftikhar Hussain also apprised the pashmina growers about various initiatives being undertaken by the UT Administration of Ladakh for the promotion and development of the pashmina sector across the Union Territory. He encouraged the growers to actively participate in departmental programmes and adopt improved practices for better production and productivity.
On the occasion, the Director also distributed pashmina combs among pashmina breeders of the area, facilitating them with essential tools for improved management of pashmina goats and collection of quality fibre.
The Director subsequently visited the Fodder Development Farm at Bearas to assess its present status and explore its further development as a dedicated Pashmina Farm Drass, besides examining possibilities for strengthening fodder production at the farm. He emphasized the importance of developing adequate fodder resources to support sustainable livestock and pashmina production in the high-altitude region.
During his visit, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain also held a fruitful meeting with Deputy Commissioner Drass Sh. Imteeaz Kacho, wherein detailed discussions were held on various issues concerning the development and strengthening of the Sheep Husbandry Sector in Drass District.
The Deputy Commissioner assured the Director of full cooperation and support from the district administration for the development and expansion of departmental activities in the district. District Sheep Husbandry Officer Drass Dr. Zakir Hussain was also accompanied with the Director during the meeting.
The Director also inspected the construction site of the Livestock Shed and Staff Quarters at Mina Marg Highland Pastures and reviewed the progress and requirements associated with the project.
The visit provided an opportunity to take first-hand assessment of the developmental potential of the sheep husbandry, especially pashmina sector, in Drass and to deliberate upon measures for improving livestock infrastructure, fodder availability and pashmina production for the benefit of local breeders and farmers.
