Kargil, April 16, 2026: In a significant push towards improving urban infrastructure, Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC Kargil, Rakesh Kumar on Wednesday chaired a high-level review meeting to strategize decongestion, beautification, and civic management measures for Kargil town.
The meeting deliberated extensively on streamlining overhead cabling and removing redundant infrastructure. Representatives from BSNL, Jio, and Airtel were directed to organize and regulate wiring systems to eliminate clutter and enhance public safety, while the Power Development Department was instructed to remove unnecessary poles and rationalize existing ones. Local cable operators were also asked to bring uniformity in wiring to improve the town’s aesthetic appeal.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasized proper installation and protection of electricity meters, directing that all meters be secured in appropriate boxes. He further called for the removal of redundant telecom and electric poles to create a cleaner urban landscape.
Addressing drainage issues, Kumar directed authorities to upgrade systems in Poyen and the main market by channeling wastewater efficiently towards the river after treatment. He also proposed utilizing gravity-based flow up to Shilikchey and exploring reuse of treated water for agricultural purposes, ensuring sustainable resource management.
Strict measures were outlined to preserve river hygiene, including a ban on washing activities along riverbanks. Departments were instructed to establish designated washing ghats, while the Forest Department was tasked with undertaking plantation drives along the riverside to enhance ecological and visual appeal.
On traffic management, the Deputy Commissioner stressed decongesting market areas by reorganizing parking spaces and regulating roadside vendors. He also proposed developing structured commercial spaces and rental shops to streamline urban growth while generating revenue.
The meeting was attended by senior officials including the Additional SP, ADDC, ADC, Municipal Committee representatives, Executive Engineers, and telecom stakeholders. The Deputy Commissioner urged all departments to expedite implementation to transform Kargil into a cleaner, safer, and more organized town.
