Leh, May 25: The Department of Horticulture organized a one-day Training-cum-Farmers Awareness Programme at Horticulture Farm Saspol for farmers from Saspol, Alchi, Likir, Hemis Shukpachan, Gera, Mangu and Ulley villages.
More than 100 farmers participated in the programme, which was conducted in the presence of Chief Horticulture Officer Leh, Smt. Kunzang Wangmo, District Agriculture Officer Leh, Smt. Tashi Dolma, and Zonal Incharge Saspol, Ms. Kunzes Angmo.
The programme focused on creating awareness among farmers regarding the adoption and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for quality fruit cultivation during the upcoming season. Farmers were advised to adopt Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices and ensure timely irrigation of orchards to improve the quality and marketability of apricot crops.
Officials also highlighted opportunities for enhancing farmers’ income through the export of premium-quality apricots to national and international markets under agreements signed with export companies.
As part of the programme, demonstrations on the spraying of biopesticides and foliar nutrients were conducted. Spray pumps and biopesticides were also distributed among participating farmers.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Horticulture Officer Leh, Smt. Kunzang Wangmo, urged farmers to strictly follow recommended orchard management schedules to ensure the production of high-quality marketable produce.
District Agriculture Officer Leh, Smt. Tashi Dolma, emphasized the growing demand for organically produced fruits and encouraged farmers to register under NPOP certification norms to facilitate the export of organically certified produce and secure better market value.
During the programme, Horticulture Development Officer Leh, Dr. Sonam Dawa, informed farmers about various departmental schemes and initiatives aimed at improving horticulture production and strengthening livelihoods. He encouraged farmers to avail themselves of the maximum benefits under these schemes.
The department appreciated the active participation of farmers and reaffirmed its commitment towards strengthening the horticulture sector in the region.
