Kargil, November 16, 2025: In a landmark step toward transparent and uniform access to subsidized student accommodation, the District Administration, LAHDC Kargil, on Sunday conducted its first-ever written entrance examination for admissions to the Kargil Boys’ and Girls’ Hostels in Srinagar and Jammu. A total of 415 students appeared for the exam, held simultaneously across four centres—one in Kargil, one in Srinagar and two in Jammu—under strict supervision. The initiative marks the formal rollout of the newly framed Hostel Admission Guidelines aimed at guaranteeing fair and equitable residential support for students from Kargil pursuing higher education and competitive examinations.
Under the new guidelines, selection to all hostel seats will now be based strictly on merit determined through the written test. The guidelines also introduce a clear reservation framework to ensure fair representation. The General Category—limited to families with an annual income of up to ₹3 lakh—receives the largest share of seats, while provisions have been made for Below Poverty Line students, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, and students who are orphans or come from single-parent households.
Eligibility requirements include being a resident of Kargil district, possessing a valid Domicile Certificate and being enrolled as a regular, offline student in a recognized educational institution or coaching centre in Srinagar or Jammu. The permissible duration of stay in the hostel is tied to the official length of academic programs, covering undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses. Ph.D. scholars may stay for up to five years. Students preparing for competitive examinations are generally allowed a maximum of two years, except UPSC Civil Services aspirants who are permitted a stay of three years.
The administration has further clarified that students who fail in their regular courses or are enrolled exclusively in online coaching will be required to vacate the hostel to ensure availability for full-time students meeting eligibility criteria. The successful conduct of the entrance examination underscores the Kargil Administration’s commitment to establishing a structured, merit-based admission process and strengthening residential support for its student community.
