Leh: Marking six years since Ladakh became a Union Territory, Independent MP from the region, Mohmad Haneefa, has highlighted significant infrastructure development in the region over the last five years.
In an interview with news agency, MP Haneefa acknowledged the steady progress in roads and border infrastructure, thanking Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their support in strengthening Ladakh’s strategic and civilian connectivity.
“Ladakh has witnessed improvement in infrastructure, especially along the borders, which has been critical for both development and security,” said Haneefa.
He appreciated the central government’s efforts in enhancing connectivity and facilities across the region.
He mentioned that development in border areas has helped bolster local confidence and ease the movement of troops and civilians in high-altitude zones.
However, the MP also gently reminded that demands for constitutional safeguards and democratic representation remain central to the aspirations of Ladakhi people.
He reiterated that Ladakh’s cultural diversity, fragile environment, and distinct identity need to be protected with special provisions under the Constitution.
While the dialogue with the Union Government is ongoing through platforms like the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, Haneefa maintained that Ladakhis wish for a peaceful, negotiated path forward.
“We don’t want agitation; we believe in dialogue. But we also need clarity and timelines from the Centre,” he said.
He further urged the government to address long-standing demands such as the Zojila tunnel for all-weather connectivity, better air services for Kargil, and improved healthcare facilities.
Despite the challenges, MP Haneefa remained hopeful. “Ladakh has always stood for peace and sacrifice. We trust the Centre will respond to the people’s aspirations,” he said.
