Leh: Ladakh came alive with vibrant colours, sacred rituals, and deep-rooted cultural pride as the 9th edition of dPal rNgam Duston was celebrated on the occasion of Union Territory Declaration Day.
Held under the theme “Compassion”, the day marked a spirited tribute to Ladakh’s history, identity, and aspirations for a united and progressive future.
The celebrations began with traditional offerings, including the Khatak, butter lamp lighting, and Lharna—a sacred musical tribute—creating a spiritually rich atmosphere.
The ceremonial arrival of the Lhardak at the heritage site Khatok Chhenmo was followed by tea offerings and auspicious dance performances such as the Chyapskyan, reflecting the deep cultural and religious traditions of the region.
Chairman of LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson, addressed the gathering and congratulated the people of Ladakh on this historic occasion.
Reflecting on the nearing completion of the current Council’s five-year term, he emphasized both the milestones achieved and the path ahead.
“Ladakh has seen significant progress, particularly in remote and rural areas,” he said. “However, much remains to be done. We must continue working toward a self-reliant and sustainable Ladakh.”
He urged people to stay united, engage constructively, and focus on preserving Ladakh’s unique cultural heritage through practical action.
“Let us respect diverse views and think together about the Ladakh we wish to build—one that is inclusive, forward-thinking, and rooted in shared values,” he added.
Following the speech, the day unfolded into a rich cultural display. The Khatok Chhenmo dance and Shondol song and dance captivated the audience, followed by a grand cultural procession that passed through Leh Bazaar, culminating at the Polo Ground.
The parade featured traditional music, colourful masks, and folk presentations from across the region, showcasing Ladakh’s diversity and unity.
At the Polo Ground, the Lhardak led the Solchot offering, followed by another spiritual dance. A highlight of the event was the Shondol performance by 90 female artists as a tribute to the 90th birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
The crowd was also treated to a spectacular traditional horse-riding show by skilled riders from Phobrang.
The celebrations concluded with Da-sRad, the ceremonial closing that marked the end of the spiritual and cultural gathering.
