Leh: In a remarkable testament to growing urban development and sanitation efforts, Kargil town has been adjudged one of India’s “Promising Swachh Shehars” in the prestigious Swachh Survekshan 2024, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
Announced during a grand award ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, the recognition marks a significant achievement for the Union Territory of Ladakh, placing Kargil alongside Jammu as two of the cleanest emerging cities in their respective regions.
The survey, conducted over April and May 2025, evaluated urban bodies on multiple parameters of cleanliness, solid waste management, citizen engagement, and sustainable sanitation.
While Jammu made headlines by jumping from 248th to 42nd rank in the 3-10 lakh population category, Kargil earned a spot in the national list of 34 “Promising Swachh Shehars”, representing 33 States and Union Territories. The title recognizes towns and cities showing exceptional promise in cleanliness, waste management and environmental upkeep.
The awards were presented by President Droupadi Murmu, in the presence of Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, drawing dignitaries from across the country.

Local officials and citizens in Kargil welcomed the announcement with pride and optimism. The award is expected to bolster morale, encourage community participation, and attract greater support for sustainable urban growth in Ladakh.
This national recognition not only puts Ladakh’s urban efforts on the map but also signals the emerging civic consciousness and administrative focus on environmental sustainability in high-altitude towns like Kargil.
As the region continues to evolve post-UT status, the focus on urban hygiene, sanitation infrastructure, and waste management has gained significant momentum. The tag of “Promising Swachh Shehar” now sets a strong foundation for future upgrades — possibly aiming for star ratings and national rankings in coming years.
