Drass, October 9, 2025 – The Director Sheep Husbandry Department, UT Ladakh, paid an official visit to Drass Sub Division today to take stock of the ongoing activities and infrastructure of the Sheep Extension Centre and the Merino Sheep Breeding Farm (MSBF) at Lakthang, Drass. The Director was accompanied by District Sheep Husbandry Officer (DSHO) Kargil, Dr. Niyazul Hasnain, and Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, MSBF Lakthang Dr. Nasir Hussain.
During the visit, the Director held a detailed discussion with the Hon’ble Councillor of Drass, Shri Abdul Samad, and other local village representatives regarding the revival and development of livestock in the region, particularly in the context of the challenges faced after the 1999 conflict. The deliberations focused on enhancing livestock-based livelihoods, with special emphasis on establishing sheep and goat units, including Pashmina goat units, to create sustainable income sources for the youth of the block.
The local representatives expressed their gratitude to the Director for his patient hearing and requested concrete steps for setting up such units in the block. The Director assured full departmental support and urged the community to actively participate in the revival of livestock in the area. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring long-term development of the livestock sector.
The Hon’ble Councillor and other village representatives thanked the Director for his proactive approach and pledged their full cooperation to the Department of Sheep Husbandry in its initiatives.
Later, the Director visited the Merino Sheep Breeding Farm at Lakthang to assess the health and management of livestock and the condition of fodder lands. He expressed satisfaction over the health of the animals and the efforts being put in by the staff. He directed the employees to continue working diligently towards improving livestock care and enhancing fodder production for the long-term success of the farm.
