Nyoma: As part of the celebrations for the ‘International Year of Cooperatives 2025’, the Department of Cooperatives, LAHDC-Leh, organized an awareness camp-cum-workshop at Hanley. The event was graced by Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Nyoma, Sh. Tushar Anand (IAS) as the Chief Guest.
During the program, Dr. Mohd Abass, Deputy Registrar, Cooperative Department Leh, addressed the gathering comprising local farmers and residents. He highlighted the significance of the UN-declared International Year of Cooperatives and informed that a calendar of events marking the year-long celebration has been officially launched by the Chief Secretary of UT Ladakh.
Dr. Abass elaborated on the vital role of cooperatives in fostering economic development, especially in rural and remote areas. He emphasized that cooperative societies provide essential commodities at fair prices, and also contribute to bulk procurement, processing, and marketing of local produce such as pashmina, milk, sea buckthorn, and apricots. He also noted the successful collaboration between cooperative societies and the Indian Army for marketing local vegetables and fruits through negotiated contracts, significantly boosting local livelihoods.
He further called for strengthening existing cooperative societies to ensure sustained development and better services to farmers and the general public. On infrastructure, he informed that construction of two cooperative retail outlets at Khaldo and Punguk has been completed and both outlets are functioning efficiently.
Addressing the gathering, SDM Tushar Anand encouraged locals to avail themselves of the schemes and initiatives run by the Cooperative Department and other government departments.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Nawang Tsering, Assistant Registrar, Cooperative Department Nyoma, who expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest, dignitaries, departmental officials, and all participants.
