Chibra: The Ladakh Regional Centre of the National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE), under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, successfully conducted a Consultation Workshop cum Field Visit at Chibra Village, Durbuk Block, on 3rd May 2025.
This initiative was held under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS)-funded project titled “Carbon Budget and Eco-hydrological Dynamics of Selected Himalayan High-altitude Grasslands and Their Carrying Capacity.”
The event was graced by the presence of the Hon’ble Councilor, Shri Konchok Stanzin, who, along with scientists and experts from NIHE, engaged with local villagers to discuss the importance of establishing long-term instrument facilities for monitoring the health of trans-Himalayan grasslands.
Dr. Sandipan Mukherjee, Principal Investigator of the project and Head of the Ladakh Regional Centre, NIHE, highlighted the significance of sustained grassland monitoring. He explained how such initiatives would not only contribute to the scientific understanding of carbon dynamics and eco-hydrology but also help determine the carrying capacity of these ecologically fragile high-altitude ecosystems. The project is expected to inform both conservation efforts and sustainable livelihood practices for the local communities.
The consultation provided a platform for knowledge exchange between scientists, stakeholders, and local residents, emphasizing the long-term ecological and socio-economic benefits of the project for the region.
