Kargil, March 01: In a humanitarian gesture, Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, distributed food kits to truck and Tata Mobile drivers stranded at various locations in Kargil due to the closure of the Kargil-Srinagar National Highway.
The food distribution initiative covered drivers stuck at the petrol pump, Shilikchey, and several other locations. Alongside this, the CEC instructed the concerned authorities to arrange temporary accommodation for the affected drivers to ensure their well-being during this challenging period.
To provide further assistance, the district administration shared a helpline number, enabling the stranded drivers to seek necessary support whenever required. Dr. Akhoon highlighted that the highway remains closed due to heavy snowfall at Zojilla Pass, exacerbating the difficulties faced by transporters in the region.
Addressing the operational challenges posed by severe weather conditions, the CEC assured that both manpower and machinery have been deployed to carry out efficient snow clearance from Minamarg towards the Zojilla Axis. He expressed optimism that the road would be reopened for vehicular movement soon, depending on favorable weather conditions, especially in light of the ongoing holy month of Ramazan.
During the visit, Dr. Akhoon also reviewed the ongoing snow clearance efforts by the Municipal Committee Kargil and commended their dedication and efficiency. He appreciated the relentless efforts of all stakeholders and workers involved in maintaining essential services during these difficult times.
The CEC was accompanied by Additional Deputy Commissioner Kargil, the Administrator of Municipal Committee Kargil, Assistant Director FCS&CA Kargil, Accounts Officer to the Deputy Commissioner Kargil, and other officials.
