Nubra, June 8: Deputy Commissioner Nubra Mukul Beniwal chaired a review meeting on the prevention, control and awareness of drug abuse as part of the Union Territory-wide campaign to build a drug-free society.
The Deputy Commissioner stressed that prevention remains the most effective strategy in combating substance abuse and directed all stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns, particularly among students, through counselling programmes and mentorship initiatives.
He also called for wider dissemination of anti-drug awareness material through public spaces and social media platforms.
During the meeting, Superintendent of Police Nubra Stanzin Losal informed participants that intensive checking and patrolling are being carried out at North Pullu, Agyam, Panamik and other strategic locations to prevent the smuggling of narcotics into the district.
He said strict action would be taken against individuals involved in drug trafficking and added that law enforcement agencies are working to identify and recover narcotic substances already circulating in the region.
The Deputy Commissioner urged government departments, religious leaders, community representatives and village Numberdars to work together in addressing the challenge of drug abuse and ensuring that no gaps remain in enforcement or awareness efforts.
The meeting concluded with a call for greater community participation and coordinated action to make Nubra a drug-free district.
Among those present were SP Nubra Stanzin Losal, SDM Nubra Jigmet Raftan, representatives of various government departments, religious organisations, educational institutions, trade bodies, transport associations and local community groups.
