Kargil, November 15, 2025: The Wildlife Division Kargil, in collaboration with local community representatives, marked Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas in Rangdum on Saturday, celebrating the region’s tribal heritage while drawing attention to the urgent need for conserving its fragile high-altitude wetlands.
The programme featured an informative session by wildlife officials who underlined the critical ecological role of wetlands, describing them as the “lungs of the Earth.” They highlighted how wetlands naturally filter water by trapping sediments and pollutants, regulate water flow, sustain rich biodiversity and act as buffers against environmental degradation.
Officials stressed that the protection of these sensitive ecosystems is essential for maintaining ecological balance in the Himalayan landscape. They urged residents and authorities to work together to safeguard wetlands for future generations.
An open interaction was also held between the Wildlife Division staff and local residents of Rangdum, during which concerns related to wetland protection, wildlife movement and related issues were discussed. The Division assured the community that their grievances would be taken up through coordinated action involving local participation and sustainable management practices.
The event concluded with a collective pledge to strengthen conservation efforts while preserving the cultural identity and environmental heritage of Rangdum and its surrounding areas.
