Leh, April 26, 2026: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra Nyoma Changthang, under the University of Ladakh, marked a significant milestone towards environmental sustainability by planting more than 1,480 willow trees at the KVK Nidder Farm.
The plantation drive was conducted under the guidance of Vinai Kumar Saxena, Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, and Prof. Saket Kushwaha, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, with the objective of increasing green cover in the Union Territory.
The drive was led by Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, Head, KVK Nyoma, along with the KVK team. The initiative evolved into a strong example of community-led environmental stewardship in the fragile high-altitude ecosystem of Changthang.
The event witnessed active and enthusiastic participation from local communities of Nyoma, Mudh, and Nidder villages. More than 65 villagers joined hands with the KVK team, contributing significantly to the success of the plantation drive.
Community members played a vital role in all stages of the plantation process, including pit digging, sapling placement, spacing, and initial irrigation. Their indigenous knowledge of local terrain, climatic conditions, and soil characteristics proved instrumental in identifying suitable planting sites and ensuring higher survival rates of the saplings.
Despite logistical challenges posed by the remote and harsh climatic conditions of the region, the plantation of over 1,480 willow trees was successfully accomplished through collective efforts and strong community participation.
The initiative highlights a shift towards community-driven environmental conservation, demonstrating the impact of collaborative action between scientific institutions and local residents. It also reinforces the importance of sustainable practices in preserving the ecological balance of the unique Changthang region.
The plantation drive stands as a testament to the shared commitment of KVK Nyoma and local communities towards environmental conservation and strengthening the bond between people and nature.
