Kargil, April 20, 2026: World Heritage Day 2026 was celebrated with enthusiasm and community participation in Kargil through a meaningful Heritage Walk organized in and around Goma village. The programme was held under the global theme “Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters,” highlighting the urgent need to safeguard cultural heritage in vulnerable regions like Ladakh.
The event was graced by the Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC Kargil, Shri Rakesh Kumar, who attended as the Chief Guest and formally flagged off the Heritage Walk. Renowned Architect Fayaz Ali participated as the Special Guest and served as the guide for the walk.
The Heritage Walk traversed several historically and culturally significant sites, including Khanka Goma Kargil, Old Imam Bargah Kargil, Hartun, Imam Bargah Goma Kargil, and Chospang, offering participants a firsthand experience of the region’s rich and living heritage. Students and participants were sensitized about the importance of preserving these sites, especially in the face of environmental challenges and changing socio-cultural dynamics.
During the walk, Architect Fayaz Ali, along with cultural activist Anayat Ali, provided detailed insights into the architectural styles, historical relevance, and cultural narratives associated with each location. The interactive engagement helped students connect deeply with their roots and understand the value of heritage conservation.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner lauded the efforts of the education fraternity of Kargil, led by the Chief Education Officer (CEO), for the notable improvement in academic results of class 10th compared to previous years. He emphasized the need to further enhance educational standards by adopting activity-based and experiential learning approaches, which can foster creativity, critical thinking, and holistic development among students.
The DC also highly appreciated the contributions of Anayat Ali Shotopa for his sustained efforts in the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage in Kargil. He acknowledged his initiative of starting World Heritage Day celebrations in the district since 2022, which has now grown into a significant annual event fostering awareness and community participation.
Furthermore, the Deputy Commissioner assured that the issues and demands of the school, raised by the Secretary of the Village Education Committee (VEC), Mr. Abass Ali Khan, would be taken up and addressed on priority.
The programme was organized by the Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation, in collaboration with Council Model High School, Goma Kargil, reflecting a strong partnership between civil society and the education sector in promoting heritage awareness.
The event witnessed the active participation of Headmaster Ms. Zareena Batool, Convenor of the Kargil Chapter of the Foundation, members of the Village Education Committee, parents, teachers, and a large number of students.
The celebration concluded on a positive note, with participants expressing a renewed sense of responsibility towards preserving and protecting the unique cultural identity and heritage of Kargil for future generations.
