Leh: Rudra Gout PT, IAS, Chairman of the Animal Welfare Board of Ladakh and Secretary of Animal Husbandry, along with Sh. Sanjit Rodrigues, IAS, Administrative Secretary of Housing & Urban Development and Tourism & Culture, visited animal shelters run by NGOs in Leh. The team was accompanied by the Director of Animal Husbandry, Ladakh.
During the visit, the team inspected the animal shelter of Chamba Animal Welfare Society in Thiksey, the Stray Animal Care & Management Centre (Live to Rescue) in Nang, and the Semschen Animal Welfare Society at Taisuru. The NGOs apprised the officials about their ongoing activities and future plans. Chamba Animal Welfare Shelter is currently housing around 300 stray dogs, including injured, diseased animals and puppies. Semschen Shelter is caring for approximately 260 dogs while also conducting daily feeding of stray dogs at various points in Leh. Live to Rescue manages about 160 dogs along with a large number of injured and abandoned stray animals, rodents, and poultry.
The officials appreciated the dedicated efforts of the NGOs in caring for vulnerable animals and assured them of all possible support from the administration to further strengthen animal welfare initiatives in Ladakh. The visit highlighted the administration’s commitment to promoting animal care and supporting local organisations working for the welfare of stray and injured animals in the region.
