Leh, July 23, 2025 – As part of the “Month of Compassion” initiative being observed across Nubra Sub-Division throughout July 2025, the Department of Agriculture actively participated by organizing awareness and outreach camps aimed at promoting compassion, sustainability, and community development through agriculture.
The department conducted one-day awareness camps at Kobet on 18th July and at Turtuk Youl on 19th July 2025. The objective of these camps was to revive traditional agricultural knowledge and introduce sustainable farming practices to the local farming communities.
During the camps, agricultural officials delivered insightful lectures on highly nutritious traditional crops that were once widely cultivated in the region but have since become neglected due to lack of awareness. The speakers emphasized the nutritional benefits, cultural significance, and commercial potential of these crops, particularly highlighting their growing value in the global market. Farmers were encouraged to reintroduce these crops into their existing agricultural practices to enhance both dietary diversity and income generation.
A dedicated workshop on sustainable agriculture was also held as part of the camp. The session focused on eco-friendly farming techniques including composting, soil and water conservation, and the use of organic bio-inputs. Officials noted that Ladakh, with its naturally clean air, water, and soil, already practices organic farming by default and guided farmers on how to further enhance sustainability in their fields.
The awareness camps received an overwhelmingly positive response from the local community. Farmers participated enthusiastically, expressed appreciation for the initiative, and showed readiness to adopt the traditional and sustainable farming methods introduced during the sessions. The interactive format of the camps fostered valuable exchanges between officials and farmers, creating a platform for mutual learning and collaboration.
