Kargil: Amid growing concerns over the increasing population of stray dogs in Kargil district, Deputy Commissioner and CEO of LAHDC Kargil, Rakesh Kumar (IAS), chaired a crucial meeting on Tuesday to initiate the formation of the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The meeting, held at the DC’s office chamber, brought together key stakeholders including Senior Superintendent of Police Shri Ram R., Divisional Forest Officer Shakeel Ahmad, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Dr. Gulzar Hussain, Wildlife Warden Raza Ali Abidi, and officials from the Municipal Committee and Rural Development Department.
During the discussion, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Dr. Gulzar highlighted that nearly 8,000 stray dogs have already been sterilised across the district, and that the department is actively continuing these efforts to mitigate the issue.
Taking note of the seriousness of the matter, DC Rakesh Kumar stressed the need for accelerated action on both administrative and ground levels. He directed officials to expedite the registration of the proposed animal welfare society and ensure swift execution of field activities, especially intensified sterilisation campaigns.
He further instructed departments to establish a monitoring mechanism for reporting and responding to incidents of animal cruelty, underlining that animal welfare is a shared responsibility and must be taken seriously by all stakeholders.
The formation of the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is expected to bring better coordination among departments and facilitate more structured efforts in animal care, control of stray populations, and public safety in Kargil.
