Leh: On 10th and 11th June, the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyaan was successfully conducted in the picturesque Kargyam Valley, covering the villages of Chibra, Satto, KheraPulu, and Burma.
The sessions were led by Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, Head of KVK-Nyoma, along with officials from the Department of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Sheep Husbandry. Detailed presentations on various schemes and programs under these departments were shared by the respective scientists and officers, followed by an interactive session with the farmers of the region.
The most pressing concern raised by the community was the lack of a dedicated animal care unit in the Kargyam Valley. Farmers emphasized that the existing unit at the block headquarters in Durbuk, over 50 kilometers away, is inaccessible for timely support. Given that livestock, particularly yaks, form the backbone of their livelihood, the absence of nearby veterinary infrastructure poses a significant challenge.
Moreover, the increasing menace of stray dogs has become a major threat to their livestock. The farmers also highlighted the need for improved marketing channels for yak-based products and requested better input support for yak rearing.
In Burma village, the issue of water scarcity was underscored, and the community sought assistance for a water-lifting mechanism to be installed on a community basis. Pest infestations, especially aphids in the greenhouse structures, were also reported as a recurring problem.
Additionally, farmers voiced their frustration over the lack of timely compensation for yak losses due to wildlife attacks, citing communication gaps and delayed response from officials as major hindrances. Many incidents go uncompensated as the officials fail to visit the site in time to verify the losses.
The sessions witnessed the active participation of over 135 individuals, including farmers and departmental officials. KVK Nyoma also distributes inputs such as electric milk churners, Garden rack, hand hoe, portable sprayer with neem oil, Greenhouse polythenes to needy farmers.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Tashi Dolker from KVK-Nyoma, who expressed gratitude to all the goba members and local participants for their enthusiastic involvement and support in making the Abhiyaan a success.
