Padum, Zanskar | June 04, 2025 — As part of the ongoing Viksit Bharat Abhiyan campaign launched on 29th May 2025, a mega awareness-cum-developmental event was successfully conducted at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Padum, Zanskar. The programme was organized under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Mehdi (Principal Scientist and Head) of KVK Kargil-II, with the aim of empowering tribal farmers through sustainable agriculture, scientific interventions, and multi-departmental collaboration.
The event was graced by Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Er. Phunsuk Tashi who attended as the Chief Guest. His presence and keynote address added significant value to the programme, inspiring both officials and farmers to work together toward rural transformation.
A plantation drive of 500 cuttings of Salix species (willow) was carried out at selected sites. These species play a vital role in soil conservation, and ecological restoration, particularly in high-altitude regions like Zanskar.
Distribution of high-yielding vegetable seedlings, including early-maturing and climate-resilient varieties of different crops, was done to promote nutritional security and off-season vegetable production.
Under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) initiative, essential tool kits comprising farm implements were distributed to selected tribal farmers. The tools aim to reduce drudgery, enhance operational efficiency, and support smallholder farmers in remote areas. A total of 185 farmers from various remote villages across Zanskar valley actively participated in the event.
The Chief Guest, Er. Phuntsog Tashi, emphasized the need for convergence between scientific research and field-level implementation. He spoke on the potential of modern practices, youth engagement, and local entrepreneurship in realizing the vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
The programme witnessed collaborative participation from officers of key allied departments including the Agriculture Department, Sheep Husbandry Department, and Rural Development Department. These officials, along with KVK scientists, delivered technical lectures addressing key challenges and opportunities in the region’s farming systems.
The Principal Scientist and Head, KVK, in his address, highlighted critical challenges like short growing seasons, climate stress, and market inaccessibility. He also introduced farmers to advanced technologies such as protected cultivation, integrated farming systems, and micro-irrigation methods.
The programme’s success was ensured by the tireless efforts of the KVK team, including Mr. Tashi Dawa, Mr. Angchuk, Mr. Tamchos, and the support staff and laborers of KVK Padum, who worked diligently to coordinate and execute the event smoothly.
