Leh: The National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa (NISR), Leh, organized a condolence meeting today in memory of eminent Sowa-Rigpa scholar and senior Amchi Gyurmet Namgail Zangpopa, who passed away on April 13, 2025, at the age of 95.
Amchi Gyurmet Namgail was one of the pioneering figures in the field of Sowa-Rigpa in India and served as the first Research Officer of the Amchi Research Unit, which later evolved into the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa, Leh.
The condolence gathering began with the lighting of the traditional butter lamp in his memory by Dr. Padma Gurmet, Director, NISR, followed by a collective prayer by staff and students of the Institute.
Speakers including Dr. Nawang Tangais, Dr. Tsewang Dolma, and Mr. Rinchan Tundup delivered lectures highlighting the life, contributions, and enduring legacy of Amchi Gyurmet Namgail.
Born in 1930 in Timisgam Village to the renowned Zangpopa family, Amchi Gyurmet dedicated his life to the preservation and promotion of Sowa-Rigpa in Ladakh. He authored the first Sowa-Rigpa formulations book titled “Amchi Pharmaco-Therapeutics”, a milestone in traditional medical literature.
In his tribute, Dr. Padma Gurmet shared personal memories and praised Amchi Gyurmet as “a legendary scholar and physician, deeply knowledgeable in both theory and practice of Sowa-Rigpa.” He also acknowledged Amchi Gyurmet’s key roles as Vice President and Advisor to the Ladakh Amchi Sabha over several years.
The staff and students of NISR expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, praying for Amchi Gyurmet Namgail’s early rebirth.
His demise marks a significant loss to the Sowa-Rigpa fraternity across the country.
