Leh: On the 29th of March 2025, the Animal Husbandry Department, Leh, hosted an awareness camp and input distribution program dedicated to the conservation of the Zanskari Pony. This initiative, conducted under the Network Project on Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR), aimed to educate the local community on the importance of preserving the Zanskari Pony, a significant cultural and agricultural asset.
The event saw participation from around 30 livestock rearers from Choglamsar, Agling and Kharnakling. Dr. Arif Kacho, VAS, Chuchot, led a presentation on the Zanskari Pony’s role in agriculture and culture, outlining importance of its conservation and presenting strategies for long-term sustainability.
Following the presentation, an interactive discussion allowed farmers to raise their concerns and offer suggestions. Dr. Stanzin Rabgais, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Leh, emphasized how the farmers could benefit from these initiatives and various schemes being implemented by the department and assured them of continuous support and assistance in future.
The event concluded with the distribution of essential items, including horse bridles, provided free of charge, as well as horse gram on 50% subsidy.
