Kargil: Following the directions of the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, Ladakh, the Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Rakesh Kumar chaired a meeting to deliberate on key developmental initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable infrastructure, tourism, and ecological conservation in the Drass region.

During the meeting, the DC directed concerned departments to undertake a drone survey along a 2-kilometre stretch of the Drass River towards Minimarg to identify feasible starting and end points for a proposed check dam. As directed by the HLG during his recent visit, the project aims to regulate water flow and facilitate its efficient utilization for lift irrigation and other purposes.

The DC emphasized the immense potential of Mushkoh Valley for wildlife and wild tulip-based eco-tourism and directed the Tourism Department to explore avenues for its systematic development so that visitors can experience and appreciate the natural beauty of the area.

Regarding Droupadi Kund, the DC instructed officials to ensure its protection and explore its development as a scenic viewpoint and tourist attraction, allowing visitors to experience the site while preserving its natural and aesthetic value.

To ensure coordinated action, the DC directed the constitution of a multi-departmental committee comprising officials from the Irrigation & Flood Control Department, Tourism Department, Forest Department, Wildlife Department, Information Department, Agriculture Department, and district administration including ACR and ACD. The committee has been tasked with preparing a detailed report and submitting recommendations at the earliest.

The DC further called for proposals regarding the development of tulip gardens in Kargil, including the promotion and conservation of wild tulips to enhance the region’s tourism appeal. It was also discussed that suitable land may be identified for tulip cultivation or alternatively utilized for agricultural purposes.

Highlighting the need for sustainable tourism, the DC stressed the creation of infrastructure that allows tourists to stay, explore, and enjoy the scenic beauty of the area, while ensuring optimal utilization of natural resources and long-term development.
