Leh: The District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Leh organized an impactful awareness program titled “Understanding Silicosis: Symptoms, Causes, and Care” at Chuchot on July 26, 2025, as part of the ongoing ‘Month of Compassion’ campaign.

The event focused on raising awareness about silicosis, a serious occupational lung disease caused by prolonged exposure to silica dust, while also promoting key initiatives under Mission Shakti and Mission Vatsalya aimed at women and child welfare.

Dr. Yangchan Dolma, District Health Officer, delivered a detailed presentation outlining the causes, symptoms, and preventive measures related to silicosis. She stressed the importance of protective practices for workers engaged in high-risk sectors, such as construction and mining.

The program was graced by Shri Mirza, Hon’ble Councillor of Chuchot, as the Chief Guest, demonstrating the local administration’s commitment to community health and well-being. Shri Mohammad Abbas, retired Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), attended as the Special Guest and shared valuable insights from his research and field work on silicosis in the Chuchot belt, calling for sustained efforts to combat the disease.

CDPO Leh, Tsering Youdol, attended as a distinguished guest, reinforcing the importance of grassroots-level awareness campaigns to safeguard community health.

Kunzang Angmo, Gender Specialist at DHEW, elaborated on the goals of Mission Shakti and the role of the One Stop Centre (OSC) in providing integrated support to women facing violence or distress. Her session highlighted the multiple support mechanisms in place to empower and protect women in the region.

Additionally, representatives from Mission Vatsalya informed attendees about various government schemes aimed at ensuring child safety, development, and well-being. A short video on the Child Helpline was screened to spread awareness about accessible support services for children in need.

As part of the program’s practical outreach, N95 masks and respirometers were distributed among participants to promote respiratory health and encourage early detection of lung-related conditions.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents, health workers, and community leaders, creating a collaborative platform to address issues related to health, gender equality, and child welfare.

The District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Leh reaffirmed its commitment to raising awareness and empowering communities through such inclusive and socially relevant initiatives.
