Kargil: Issuing a strong message against drug abuse, Deputy Commissioner and CEO, LAHDC Kargil, Rakesh Kumar (IAS), has directed officials to ensure strict and regular monitoring of drug-related activities across the district. He emphasized the need for coordinated field inspections by the agriculture, forest, and police departments to detect and prevent any unlawful practices.
DC Rakesh Kumar was chairing the monthly District Level NCORD (Narco Coordination Centre) meeting at his office chamber, convened in line with the directives of the State Level NCORD Meeting of UT Ladakh.
The meeting was attended by SSP Kargil, Divisional Forest Officer, Wildlife Warden, Excise and Taxation Officer, District Drugs Controller, Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), representatives from Health, Social Welfare, Agriculture, Education, ITBP, and DDAC, among others.
During the meeting, the committee reviewed the latest trends in drug trafficking, progress of ongoing investigations, and steps taken toward awareness generation, particularly in schools and colleges. Members also discussed the need to enhance detection systems, promote alternative livelihoods, and improve de-addiction facilities.
The DC called for robust inter-departmental coordination to ensure swift sharing of information and action in drug-related matters. He instructed the concerned departments to intensify awareness drives using pamphlets, posters, and targeted outreach programs, especially focusing on youth and students.
A major directive included the establishment of a One-Stop Coordination Centre, bringing together services and data from the health, education, social welfare, and law enforcement departments to offer a holistic response to substance abuse cases.
The DC further stressed the importance of rehabilitation and reintegration, urging the promotion of employment schemes that can help communities, particularly vulnerable youth, move away from drug-related activities. He also instructed departments to work toward upgrading facilities at the District Drug De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre, ensuring that those seeking help receive proper care and support. The meeting concluded with a collective resolve to strengthen enforcement, expand education, and enhance community-based rehabilitation in the fight against drug abuse in Kargil.
