ZANSKAR, May 6: In a proactive move to promote road safety and legal awareness, Police Station Zanskar, under the directions of the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kargil, organized a comprehensive awareness program on offences under the Motor Vehicle Act, with a special focus on violations committed by juveniles. The event, aimed at educating the public about legal consequences and traffic rules, was held at the Conference Hall of the Tourist Dak Bungalow, Padum.
The program highlighted key provisions such as Section 199A and Section 4/180 of the Motor Vehicle Act, which hold guardians and vehicle owners accountable for offences committed by minors.
Executive Councillor for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, LAHDC Kargil, Er. Punchok Tashi, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Other notable attendees included Tehsildar Zanskar Sh. Mohd. Hassan, SHO Zanskar Sh. Stanzin Gyaltsan, Tourism Officer Zanskar, and heads of local unions including the Nambardar Association, Taxi Union, Tempo Union, and Tipper Union, along with Lambardars, drivers, and members of the Transport Cooperative Society.
During the session, SHO Stanzin Gyaltsan educated the participants on traffic laws and the importance of following road safety norms. He stressed the repercussions of negligent driving and the legal responsibilities of vehicle owners, especially when juveniles are involved.
In his address, Er. Punchok Tashi urged drivers to strictly comply with traffic regulations, emphasizing their role as the first representatives of Zanskar to tourists. “A driver’s behavior leaves a lasting impression, influencing how visitors perceive our region,” he said, while appreciating the police’s initiative.
The event was widely appreciated by the attendees, who acknowledged the importance of such awareness drives in building a safer and more responsible transport ecosystem in Zanskar.
