As part of the nationwide observance of Road Safety Week, various departments are conducting awareness programs tailored to their respective expertise. In alignment with this initiative, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) department organized an awareness program at Shang Village on 15 Jan 2025, emphasizing the importance of engineering considerations in ensuring road safety. The following key points were discussed:
1. Avoid Construction of Structures on Curves
It was highlighted that constructing buildings or other structures on road curves creates blind spots, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Villagers are urged to refrain from constructing structures on or near road curves to ensure visibility and safety for all commuters.
2. Cooperation for Proper Road Alignment
A well-aligned road requires adequate cutting and filling during construction. However, in many instances, engineers face resistance from residents due to concerns about changes in the elevation of properties relative to the road. This misalignment can lead to road accidents. Villagers are requested to cooperate with engineers during road construction to facilitate the creation of safe and properly aligned roads.
3. Responsibility for Road Maintenance
Once roads are completed, it is essential for villagers and commuters to maintain them, similar to how they care for their homes. Unauthorized digging of roads for personal or other purposes can cause potholes and lead to accidents. Residents are reminded to refrain from unauthorized road modifications.
4. Awareness of Road Signs and Traffic Rules
Many accidents occur because drivers and commuters are not familiar with road signs, speed limits, and other traffic regulations specific to rural roads and highways. It is crucial for all road users to educate themselves about traffic rules to ensure their safety and that of others.
5. Cooperation in Land Acquisition
Land acquisition is critical for constructing roads that meet the required grade and alignment. However, engineers often face challenges due to limited land availability, leading to compromises such as roads being constructed near high flood levels, landslide-prone areas, or avalanche zones. Villagers are requested to cooperate with land acquisition efforts as per the engineering requirements for safe road construction.
6. Reporting Unauthorized Road Digging
Unauthorized digging of roads without proper permission from the competent authority can lead to severe road damage and accidents. Villagers are requested to report such activities to the concerned department immediately to prevent further damage and ensure timely action.
