Leh: In a significant move aimed at streamlining governance and promoting sustainable tourism, the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh has constituted an internal committee to examine and recommend amendments to various state laws related to the Department of Tourism and Culture.

The decision follows an official order issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) of Ladakh on December 3, 2024, and reflects the UT administration’s commitment to addressing the region’s unique legal and developmental needs.

The newly-formed committee will be tasked with reviewing 22 state laws and other legal provisions relevant to tourism and culture within the UT of Ladakh.
The goal of the committee is to prepare detailed proposals for legal amendments that can better align the region’s laws with the distinct socio-cultural and tourism-related challenges faced by Ladakh.

The committee, which will be led by the Director of the Tourism Department, includes senior officials and experts from various government departments. Key members of the committee include the Chief Executive Officer of the Tourism Development Authority for Leh, Kargil, and Zanskar, the Principal of the State Institute of Hotel Management in Leh, and the Deputy Secretary of the Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages. Legal and tourism experts, as well as officials from the Archives, Archaeology, and Museums Department, will also be part of the committee’s efforts to ensure a comprehensive review.

The committee is expected to examine existing tourism and cultural laws and propose amendments aimed at making them more relevant and effective in the context of Ladakh’s unique requirements. These recommendations will be compiled into concise reports for submission to a UT-level task force, which will further examine and approve the proposed changes.
