Leh: A five-day International Workshop on Disaster Risk Management for Galleries, Libraries, Museums, and Archives was inaugurated today at the Office of the Registering Officer for Antiquities. The event, which started today on May 5th, 2025, will continue until May 9th, 2025. Hon’ble Executive Councillor Stanzin Chosphel graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
This significant workshop is the result of a collaborative effort between Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) Conservation Division, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh, and the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museum, Union Territory of Ladakh. This initiative underscores the growing recognition of the need to protect cultural heritage sites and collections from various disaster risks.
The inaugural ceremony marked the official commencement of the workshop, emphasizing the critical role of preparedness and proactive strategies in preserving invaluable cultural assets during any disaster. Experts who will be leading the workshop include Dr. Heather Brown from Australia, Ms. Sari Sasaki from France, Ms. Chalida Uabumrungjit from Thailand, Dr. Achal Pandya, Dr. Sanjay Dhar, and Dr. Gopal Mohan from India.
The workshop is expected to provide attendees with valuable insights, methodologies, and best practices in disaster risk assessment, mitigation, and response, which will ultimately contribute to enhancing the resilience of cultural institutions in the face of potential threats.
